A Boston woman could face 40 years in prison if she is convicted of attempted murder, child endangerment, and other charges after withholding cancer treatment from her 9 year old autistic son and making doctors believe she was giving him the medication they prescribed.

In 2006, Kristen LaBrie’s child was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but had an 85-95 percent chance of recovery, according to his doctors.

After he was given large doses of chemotherapy and his cancer went into remission, doctors began prescribing medication to be administered at home, which prosecuting attorneys are alleging LaBrie did not do.

LaBrie often failed to pick up prescriptions, but still insisted they were being filled, according to prosecutors.

The discrepancy was discovered after one of the doctors called the pharmacy and learned the prescriptions weren’t being filled.

A recent government report on death and abuse in both public and private schools from restraints and seclusion reveals some unsettling facts on the need for regulation and education.

Currently, there are no laws in place that regulate these procedures, which are often administered to children with autism to protect themselves and others.

At the state level, where some laws exists, regulations vary tremendously and 19 states have absolutely no laws, including Wisconsin, Wyoming, Vermont, South Carolina, South Dakota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Nebraska, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Indiana, Idaho, Florida, Georgia, and Arizona.

That’s almost half the United States!

The National Autism Association has drafted a sample letter you can send to your representative if your state lacks laws. It might be a good idea to send it to your representative if your state does have laws so they can be improved.

Autism Speaks, the US’s largest autism science and advocacy organization has launched a national TV ad campaign that highlights failure of many private insurers to cover some autism treatment.

The ad features two families, both with boys who need medical care, but only one getting the proper treatment needed due to the insurance the family is carrying.

The ad ends with the number to contact Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, urging her to make healthcare reform that stops autism discrimination.

Thirty seconds in length, the ad will air nationally on CNN, CNBC, and MSNBC. You can find more on Autism Speaks’ initiative at autismvotes.org.
